Biography

Bettina von Lieres is a senior lecturer in the Political Studies Department at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town , South Africa , where she teaches two courses a year. She is also the convenor of the “ Deepening Democracy ” working group of the Development Research Centre for Citizenship, Participation and Accountablity at the Institute for
Development Studies, University of Sussex , as well as the convenor of a researcher/practitioner network project , the “Middle Spaces” project, funded by the Ford Foundation in Cape Town , South Africa . She has written on marginalization, citizenship and participation in South Africa . Her recent research is on the inclusion of marginalized groups in deliberative democratic spaces in Canada and South Africa . She is currently living, and also teaching, in Toronto.

Project - ‘ Working between Citizens and the State' – part of 'Deepening Democracy in States and Localities' Research Programme

Summary - The aim of this research is to examine local state and health system’s role in creating or restricting “middle space” engagement between state and civil society in the arena of HIV/Aids politics in South Africa.
